Ayurveda: The Lifestyle Part One

In part one of our feature about living an Ayurvedic lifestyle, we’re sharing 8 easy-to-follow tips and tricks to make incorporating Ayurveda into your daily life fuss-free.

  1. Breathe. Various studies have shown that deep breathing relaxes the mind. Pay attention to your breathing, filling the lungs with air slowly and steadily, then gradually exhale.
  2. Drink a glass of water. This helps to expel toxins that have gathered in the body and aids digestion.
  3. Take a walk. Ayurveda focuses on balancing all three doshas. There is no need to overexert oneself to do well by the body. Walking calms the mind and sharpens the senses.
  4. Prepare a fresh, homemade lunch using natural ingredients. Processed foods are unhealthy and difficult to digest and create ama - toxic deposits. This is not surprising given that they contain chemical preservatives. Enjoy your meal without any disturbances and concentrate your mind and senses on the task at hand.
  5. Drink a glass of milk. Trouble sleeping after a stressful day? A glass of warm milk - preferably fresh, organic milk - with a pinch of cardamom does wonders to calm the mind and body.
  6. Take a break. It’s that simple. Find a quiet place, close your eyes and concentrate on your inner being - your body. Slowly inhale and exhale. Do so several times a day and you will soon benefit from the positive effects.
  7. Enjoy a herbal tea. A caffeine-free tea helps with relaxation. Various tea blends are available for your individual dosha.
  8. Converse with a loved one. Whether it be your sister or best friend, taking the time to chat to a loving person has a positive effect on our soul and fill our bodies with energy.
