Guarana (lat. paullinia cupana) is a climber plant that belongs to the soapberry family and is originated in the tropical rainforest. Long before the first European settlers came to the Amazon region, native people already knew about the properties of that climber with its red fruits and black seeds. They called it “warana” which later became “Guarana”. Up to this day native Indians still squash Guarana seeds to the form of a solid stick which they pulverize with the help of the rough tongue of the Pirarucu fish. They apply Guarana as energizer and food substitute.

Due to its high content of natural fibres and tanning substances the agent caffeine (also called guaranin) is released slowly and can be gently absorbed by our body. Erroneously it is often claimed that guaranin and caffeine have completely different effects. However, guaranin is just the “old” or other name for caffeine.

Often the high percentage of caffeine of 3,5 % per 100 g Guarana powder has been criticized. But it is not taken into account that nobody will consume 100 g in one portion, but only 1 g. That small but sufficient quantity contains only 40 mg caffeine which is only half the amount of one cup of coffee (which contains approx. 80 mg caffeine).

Guarana is perfect for everyone who wants to enjoy the stimulating effect of caffeine but does not tolerate coffee. It is a pleasant remedy for people who often have to stand strain and want to increase their power naturally. Night owls and truckers, who usually want to stay fit without consuming too much coffee, may also profit from Guarana. In Brazil Guarana is part of everyday life and highly appreciated by soccer players, racing drivers and politicians.

Recommended use: 1 g per day (about 1/2 teaspoon) mixed into muesli, yoghurt or any other food. 1 g Guarana powder is equivalent to the caffeine amount of ½ cup of coffee.
